Buyer’s Guide to Used Vauxhall Astra Cars
Vauxhall Astra cars have been around since 1980 in Britain and this model has become a firm favourite among drivers with families.
The Astra is now in its seventh generation, and while this is an appealing option, its predecessors have not become redundant by any means. There are plenty of used Vauxhall Astra Mk5 and Mk6 cars on the market which offer a certain charm.
Used Vauxhall Astra Cars (Mk5)
Fifth generation Vauxhall Astra cars came to the UK market in 2005, initially in the form of a five-door hatchback. Shortly after, a three-door sport hatch and estate version followed, to be later joined by an Astra VXR boasting 237bhp and a convertible option.
A wide variety of engines and trims are available with models from this mark, with petrols being most popular. Setting the VXR, which prioritises performance, aside, used Vauxhall Astra cars from this generation are relatively cheap to run, particularly the 1.4-litre petrol.
Used Vauxhall Astra Cars (Mk6)
The Vauxhall Astra Mk6 is the most common on the roads at the moment, and it has been a huge hit with British drivers since it landed in 2009. Again, the five-door hatch was first to arrive, followed by a three-door GTC and a Sports Tourer Estate. In 2011, an Astra ecoFLEX was launched, with heavy focus on economy and a VXR turbocharged hot hatch came the year after.
Similarly to its predecessor, there were 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and 1.3, 1.7 and 2.0-litre diesels too. This new generation saw improvements to economy and performance overall. The 1.6-litre CDTi diesel has the lowest running costs, although petrol options will be better if your mileage will be lower.
Post-2004 used Vauxhall Astra cars have a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, so you can feel confident driving your family around in a Mk5, 6, or 7.
